PIE IN POP CULTURE

Pie is such a cornerstone of our society, it permeates our pop culture.  From Family Guy to Hannah Montana, patriarchs' adoration for pie is comic fodder.  But pie isn't just played for laughs; pie is often treated with great affection, sometimes even revered.  Behold, the beloved pie:

Art - American painter Wayne Thiebaud, associated with the Pop Art movement, created many well-known works of pie.

Theater/Movie/Book/SongSweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett owns a bakery selling meat pies - "the worst pies in London".

Showbusiness:  The diner on the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus train is called the "pie car".

Books:

Children's Book - Enemy Pie by Derek Munson.  Winner of multiple awards and a featured book on Reading Rainbow.

Movies:

Movie - American Pie (1999); American Pie 2 (2001); American Wedding (2003); and American Pie 4: Band Camp (2005)

Movie - Michael (1996):  Andie McDowell's character sings a song about pie.

Gaming - Trivial Pursuit, the goal is to earn pie slices until you have a full pie.  (Or, if you play the way the Pie Maven does, start with a full pie and take a piece away - "eat it" - when it is earned.

Gaming - In the Lord of the Rings Online (a popular MMORG - Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game), your character can earn the title of "Pie Maven" (a truly illustrious title, and the Pie Maven is extremely flattered to have a namesake in such a popular game), making you "a fine judge of pies".  To become a Pie Maven in LOTRO, you must consume 7 each of: mushroom pie, coney pie, steak & kidney pie, spiced apple pie, and perfect pie.  All must be crafted by a cook.  They can be eaten in any order at any time, even all in one sitting if you can.  Some foods are level-restricted, however.  You can't consume perfect pie unless you are at least 40th level.

Sports -  It is tradition in skydiving that when a skydiver reaches any significant number of jumps (e.g. 100; 500; 1000), his fellow jumpers "pie" him.

Television:

TV - Sopranos, Tony's racehorse was named "Pie-oh-My"

TV - "The Pie" is the 79th episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld (the 15th episode of the 5th season). It originally aired on February 17, 1994

TV - ABC series Pushing Daisies  centers around a pie maker who runs a pie shop named "The Pie Hole".

TelevisionPie Town Productions is the production company behind many hit reality shows, such as Designed to Sell, Design on a Dime, Diet Tribe, House Hunters, A Baby Story, and oodles more.

TV - In the series Twin Peaks, Agent Dale Copper (portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan) was known for his fondness of cherry pie from the Double R Cafe.

TV - In Season 8 Episode 1 of Family Guy, the characters (in Disney mode) proclaim that it's a Wonderful Day for Pie (in song).

A NOTE ON PIEING

Pieing in the act of throwing a pie in someone's face.  Pie-ing is a classic form of slapstick humor, as well as a common choice among pranksters and protesters. 
Soupy Sales is well-known for taking a pie in the face, probably more than anyone else ever.
Singer and anti-gay-rights activist Anita Bryant became one of the first persons to be "pied" as a political act in Des Moines in 1977.
According to cinematical.com, the Top 5 Cinematic Pie Fights of All Time are:  The Great Race; Bugsy Malone; The Sweet Pie and Pie; The Battle of the Century; and Dr. Strangelove.
